Facebook allows you to change your privacy settings presumably so that you can determine what others can or cannot see about you based on their relationship to you. In reality it is broken down as follows:

  • Your Friends – 1st degree contacts, or people directly connected to you
  • Friends of friends – 2nd degree contacts – anybody not directly connected to you, who is connected to a 1st degree contact.
  • Everyone else.

One important thing to keep in mind. These settings are there and they are secure, however they are not by any means guaranteed. So if you are contemplating sharing something so private that you would NEVER want it getting out. Facebook is not the place. Do it on the phone so at least you have plausible deniability 🙂 – one or more of your first degree contacts very likely has a very big mouth (or keyboard as it is).
