So you know how to take notes right? You’re in a meeting, or listening to a speaker, or maybe you are just reading a book like the one I am reading right now by Jack Canfield called “The Power Of Focus: What the World’s Greatest Achievers Know about The Secret of Financial Freedom and Success.” This is not a book you simply read for pleasure. You take notes so you can practice what you are learning and apply it in your life to get the most out of it. Depending on the context you will take notes differently. When listening to a speaker you will abbreviate for now putting just enough information so that you can go back later and expand on the notes you’ve made. When you are reading a book you can take your time because you don’t have to worry about keeping up with a live person.
Let’s face it, I’m not really here to tell you how take your notes. I am here to show you how to use one of the most powerful note taking programs I have seen to date. It’s called Evernote 4.0. This version was recently released for PCs and it is substantially improved over the previous version. For one thing if I am going to spend many hours in front of something it really helps to make something that is visually appealing and Evernote 4.0 is just that. As far as function goes, this is the real reason for this blog post and video. Imagine taking notes every day throughout the day on a notepad like the one above. It might work fine while you’re taking the notes but once you have filled one of those pads up and maybe even filled up a few others, the issue will become one of retrieval. How will you find the information you have so diligently tracked in your library of notepads? Evernote 4.0 has given us a number of ways to store and track our notes including a powerful and accurate search feature that allows us to retrieve our notes in 30 seconds or less. One of the things I have noticed running my own business is that it makes me crazy when I an struggling to try and figure out where to find information that is important to me. Evernote 4.0 has solved that problem because I have now trained myself to open Evernote 4.0 first thing when I get to my computer and I make it a point to use it to capture everything from web site URL’s to passwords which can be encrypted (you’ll see that in the video) to simple reminders where the entire note is encapsulated it it’s title (this is covered in the full length video).
Evernote 4.0 is organized in several ways:

Notebooks (create as many as you need to logically organize your information – think of your 5 subject notebooks and how you might organize the information if you were using those).
- Notes (3 types of notes Text, Ink, and Webcam)
- Tags (a powerful way to cross reference topics across all of your notebooks)
- Search (both global and now within a note and you can save your searches for the things you need access to frequently)
- Notebook Sharing (you can share a notebook with others so that you can collaborate on projects)
- Embedding files in a note (the paid version allows you to embed any file type, the free version allows for many)
