The Best Marketing Strategy Ever

My wife was fired from her job yesterday. Why? Simple. She “..cares too much.” I am not making this up. I couldn’t make this up. She was called in to her.. well I am not sure what his role is there. He is an entertainment lawyer, or he’s a musician, or maybe he is just the wife of the vet who runs the animal hospital where my wife used to work. Whatever he is (and no it wasn’t an accident that I called HIM the wife) he called MY wife in to his office to review the recording of a phone call with a client in which my wife patiently listened to the client so that she could address the client’s needs and answer her questions. This is why she was being reprimanded. She was told she cares too much and that based on this she is unprofessional. Or wait.. how did he put it? She is “psychologically inept to handle the job.” BECAUSE SHE CARES TOO MUCH!!! Again I swear I am not making this up. I couldn’t if I wanted to.

Now let’s shift gears for a minute. If you read half of what I put out there then you’ve more than likely heard me refer to Gary Vaynerhuk. One of Gary’s goals is to buy the NY Jets and I am going to venture a guess that he is well on his way to reach his goal by now. The point being that this is a guy who understands business and how to build a business. If he were inclined to he could buy the animal hospital that my wife worked for up until yesterday probably many times over. I am going to guess that if Gary Vaynerchuck bought this animal hospital the first thing he would do is fire everyone there from the top all the way down (Vet to Kennel Attendants).

Why? Well it comes from Chapter 9 of Gary’s book Crush It. For maxium impact I am going to SHOW it to you:

That is the entire chapter right there. It couldn’t be any simpler. When you care about your customers they will keep coming back, they will refer others and they will over pay for your services! That is all!

Gary might be a little busy, but if you really do have questions please post your comments below!

Great post Seth. It is unreal how many people do not genuinely care. Well I should rephrase that to “genuinely care about others”. I wish your wife the best of luck in her search for a new job. This will end up being a blessing in disguise and another door will open for her no doubt.

Thanks Josh! What blows me away is that these guys wanted her to be cold. To interrupt clients on the phone and get off the phone abruptly. This is how they apparently want to “serve” their clients. Idiots!! When my wife was there she would do everything in her power to fill their calendar – to make them money. All of the other employees would get annoyed with her. They don’t seem to understand that more business means on going paycheck! They just want to be slow, over charge their clients and give awful customer service. This is how they “roll!”

Couldn’t agree more… it always comes back to you because you reap what you sow. At the end of the day you don’t want to work for someone who doesn’t care about their customers, because they won’t care about the employees either. Loving what you are doing here… just finished a few of your videos on contract accounting and appreciated the tips.

I came across a very similar situation, but I was the one leaving. When I explained that I was not the right person for the job, they explained that I am unhappy because I care too much about the people I do busienss with. If I would simply toughen up some and care less, that I would succeed there.

This was also the same company that told me it was my job to follow the rules & their (owners) job to find all the loopholes in those rules.

    Thanks for the article.

Amazing! It always blows me away when a company practices this way and they don’t see how incredibly wrong their philosophy is. Especially in this day of total transparency on the web. They will probably be scratching their heads when a competitor who does care about the customer blows them out of the water with a very simple strategy; “Mind Blowing Customer Service.”

    Hi Seth,
You wife has probably already been hired by now, but golly gee, I sure would want her working for me! If you don’t care about your clients, how are you going to help them? If you can’t help them, why would they hire you in the first place?
Plus–she worked for a vet! As a pet owner, I would find a new vet if I thought she didn’t care about my dog. That’s so totally crazy.

Great post. I’m sure she has company. I’ve gotten fired before for being “ethical.”
